The Isle of Lewis Chess is a replica of the oldest Chess Set known. The original, which is now in the British Museum, was discovered in the 1830's in the Western Islands of Scotland and is believed to date back to the 11th century. It is thought to originate in Norway and was made from walrus ivory.
This is truly one of the best things in our shop - made by our friend Philip who is one of Ireland's most talented sculptors.
A version of the set was used to great acclaim in the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
The colours of the pieces are Ivory and Grey/Blue. Every piece is individually moulded and is hand made - there can be slight differences in colour and texture. This makes it more faithful to the original and is in the spirit of all hand crafted goods.
This version is made by the O'Gowna Studios in Co Dublin and the material is crushed local limestone mixed with a bonding agent. The Chessboard is also made from the same material and measures 15ins x 15ins (38cm x 38cm). The pieces measure from 1 1/2 ins to 3 1/2 ins (4cm to 8.5cm) high.
It is an absolute pleasure to sell such a beautiful set that is made here in Ireland. It is a really popular gift in our shop and is perfect for a host of occasions. Even non-chess players purchase it for its artistic value.
